چکیده

A computational study of a directinjection (DI) engine intake system using KIVA-3V was conducted. The engine considered had two intake ports designed to generate a swirling motion of the intake charge in the cylinder. To investigate the effect of adding shrouds to the intake valves on swirl, two sets of intake valves were considered; the first set consisted of conventional valves, and the second set of valves had back shrouds to prevent airflow on the backside of the valves. The effect of port diameters on air flow and swirl motion was also investigated. In this case, ports with two different diameters were modeled. In addition, the effect of using one or two intake ports on swirl generation was determined by blocking one of the ports. The results show that higher swirl was generated with a single port and a shrouded valve.

Examination of Initialization and Geometric Details on the Results of Cfd Simulations of Diesel Engines

Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations using the AVL Fire and Kiva 3v codes were performed to examine commonly accepted techniques and assumptions used when simulating direct injection diesel engines. Simulations of a steady state impulse swirl meter validated the commonly used practice of evaluating the swirl ratio of diesel engines by integrating the valve flow and torque history over ...

A Study of EGR Stratification in an Engine Cylinder

One strategy to decrease the amount of oxides of nitrogen formed and emitted from certain combustion devices, such as the internal combustion engine, is to recirculate and introduce a portion of the unburned product gases with the air and fuel. The effect of the re-circulated gases is to decrease the maximum temperatures in the flame zone, and hence decrease NOx formation. However, dilution of ...

Numerical Simulation of Combustion with Porous Medium in I.C. Engine

Porous media has interesting features in compared with free flame combustion due to the extended of the lean flammability limits and lower emissions. Advanced new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines are expected to have far better emissions levels both gaseous and particulate matter, at the same time having far lower fuel consumption on a wide range of operating condition. These c...

Modeling Low-Pressure Injections in Diesel HCCI Engines

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is being considered as an alternative to conventional engine combustion systems due to its high efficiency and low engine-out emissions. To prepare a homogeneous mixture for diesel HCCI combustion, two types of low pressure (5MPa~20MPa) injectors were considered: a swirl injector and a multi-hole injector. A modified version of the KIVA-...

Simulation of Spray Transport from Rotary Cup Atomizer using KIVA-3V

A numerical study of airflow and spray transport from rotary cup atomizer using KIVA-3V is carried out. The numerical result show that the electrostatic field speed up spray droplet speed and improve transfer efficiency. Breakup model produces smaller drops which are entrained into the center recirculation zone. The results of a parametric study considering different cup rotational speed, shapi...
